sayonara sexist tax!
1 January 2021 brought us the demise of the treacherous tampon tax! It’s finished! Gone! Done!
As with most parts of 2020 we’re so glad to see it go. 👋
Rishi Sunak declared that the (ridiculous) tax would be scrapped back in March, but tbh we weren't sure it would ever ACTUALLY happen. So when it was announced on the 1st that it was in fact going to be gone FOR GOOD we did such a happy dance.
And more good news, (keep it coming!) remember way back when they (the gov) said they couldn't get rid of tampon tax because of the EU, so instead they set up the Tampon Tax Fund? There was (is) some controversy around this (it transpired that some of the money was being awarded to an anti-abortion charity) - but the gist is that monies from the Tampon Tax are used to provide funding for various projects supporting women and girls. Well, the gov has promised that they’ll keep this up, for now. The jury is out as to how long they’ll continue to run the fund once the tax funds are finished, but they’ve not pulled it yet.
The projects to receive the most recent round of funding are:
So while our tampons and pads are no longer classified as ‘non-essential’, or a luxury item (we still can’t believe they ever were TBH) we will rejoice - and then roll up our sleeves and continue to work to destigmatise, and normalise periods, because let’s be honest we’re not there yet, are we?
